Let’s face it: the music industry’s obsession with audiophile culture benefits big business more than anyone. 100 years ago, people’s minds would have been blown by a scratchy recording mechanically amplified through a gramophone. Today, we’ve been erroneously convinced that we need the best-of-the-best tech in order to truly connect with that music. At the end of the day, it’s just more money in the pockets of the 1%.
As we’ve established, one of the first places that phase issues can crop up is with multi-signal recordings. Common culprits include drum sets, or acoustic guitar setups. When two very similar (or even identical) signals with a delay of < 20ms are added together, they produce a phenomenon called comb-filtering. This is a hollow, sweeping kind of sound, similar to a jet airplane or traffic passing by. Although it’s exaggerated and used for musical purposes in flange effects, it’s generally unpleasant and should be avoided.

Initially, musicians used 808s on their own as the kick. While you can definitely still do that, things have progressed. Nowadays, the subby 808s are most commonly found as a bass tone that’s been layered with a punchy kick sound. This punchier kick layer typically has less bass content and is there to help create a crisper attack. At its most basic, the kick and 808 play essentially the same pattern, but the 808 bass provides the sub and tonal content.

Syrian-American and with a voice gorgeous enough for radio, Káryyn entered 2019 running at full speed, with her full-length debut The Quanta Series earning rave reviews. The album is a meditation on memory, loss, and connections. Káryyn was compelled to write it after losing relatives in Aleppo in 2011. Her productions evoke the sounds of contemporary electronic music, but morph and shift to evoke the grief her music is channelling. The classical music world evolved over time away from Bach’s cool objectivity and toward the fiery emotionalism of the Beethoven era. In 1853, Johannes Brahms wrote a letter to Clara Schumann about the chaconne, and his description was a wee bit over the top:

I get that — creating something new is scary. You aren’t sure what people will think of it, and you’re worried it will be received negatively. There’s value in taking influence from your favorite musicians, but by copying them, you’re putting yourself in a position where if your music were to suddenly disappear, nobody would miss you as a guitarist because they can easily find your sound somewhere else.
The problem is, a bank doesn’t always see it that way. If they look at your returns and see huge write-offs (even if you made good money), they may see you as a less than ideal applicant. It boils down to banks looking at gross income for W4 earners, and net for 1099 earners — which automatically puts you at a disadvantage.
